As the creator of Unsound magazine and the avant-garde musical project Problemist, Davenport has spent decades exploring the intersections of sound, dissent, and subversive art. He is a fiercely independent documentarian, noise musician (Problemist), and publisher (Unsound Magazine and numerous books) who has spent decades chronicling radical subcultures, outsider music, and autistic self-advocacy through his raw, DIY films and experimental media projects. Born in the United States, Davenport grew up immersed in punk, industrial, and experimental music scenes. In 1983, Davenport founded Unsound, a magazine dedicated to experimental music, noise, and countercultural movements. Released by the legendary French experimental label Sordide Sentimental (known for their work with Joy Division, Psyche TV), Problemist’s Nine Times Sanity is a corrosive, cut-up descent into media manipulation, psychological control, and the fragility of perception. The album—part industrial noise, part audio collage, part punk-dada provocation—stands as one of William Davenport’s most confrontational and conceptually dense musical works.
Legacy and Influence
Other than producing documentary films, Davenport is also active in the international autism community. Davenport was a member of the San Francisco Marin Autism Taskforce. From 2007 to 2011, Davenport was the executive director of the non-profit organization Autism Social Connection; it was there that he developed his practice of teaching filmmaking to adults, teens and children on the autism spectrum. Subsquently he authored the book "Autism and Filmmaking". He has worked extensively with the San Francisco Bay Area autism organization Autism, Asperger's Coalition for Education, Networking and Development, and the Washington, D.C.–based organization ASAN (Autistic Self Advocacy Network). In the United Kingdom, Davenport has collaborated with C.R.A.E. (Centre for Research in Autism and Education) and the charity – Ambitious about Autism – on free screenings of his films followed by panel discussions. Davenport was also the executive director of Autism House, a Eugene, Oregon based non-profit organization from 2019-2023.
William has written 15 books, non-fiction and fiction and runs his own publishing company War of Ideas.
As a musician, Davenport fronts Problemist, an experimental project blending noise, industrial, spoken word, and electronic elements. Problemist’s work is confrontational—sometimes abrasive, sometimes hypnotic—addressing themes of media manipulation, societal collapse, and existential dread. Releases often appear on obscure labels or as limited-edition cassettes and CDs, reinforcing Davenport’s anti-commercial stance. The band has one record release on the prestigious French label Sordide Sentimental.
